The Magical Properties of Adaptogens

Adaptogens have become increasingly popular with naturalists and in alternative medicines, promoted as a solution to the stress and anxiety of the COVID pandemic. You’ve probably read about pills, powders and adaptogenic teas and supplements. Everyone is talking about them and at first glance, they seem amazing, but what’s all the fuss about?

What are adaptogens and why is everyone so fascinated with them? Are they really the answer to all of your problems? Soon you’ll know all you need to know about these magical plants that promise to change your life (yes, they’re legal!) and I’ll show you which products you can choose if you’re interested in them.

As always, please consult your doctor before adding adaptogens or any homeopathic remedy into your wellness routine. Some supplements may have unpleasant interactions with medication you may be on. I want you to be happy and healthy.

What are Adaptogenic Herbs?

Adaptogens are herbs and plants with special properties that are naturally occurring in nature and can help the body resist emotional or physical stressors. They help heal stress and fatigue and work by targeting the body’s three stages of stress: Alarm, resistance, and exhaustion (which is what happens when the stress alarm stays on). So basically, adaptogens help you adapt to different types of stressors.

Adaptogens are like mini vaccines, protecting against stress. Different adaptogens have different health benefits. Here are my top 3 personal favorites:

1. Ashwaganda

2. Maca Root

3. Rhodiola Rosea

There are many more, but I use these particular adaptogens and trust that they work for me. Here is a little more about each item I have purchased and re-purchased and what they are best known for:

Ashwaganda

Also known as Indian Ginseng or winter cherry, it has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha reduces stress and anxiety, can reduce symptoms of depression, reduces inflammation, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, and improves brain function and memory. Additionally, it reduces cortisol levels, which is what our adrenal glands release when we’re stressed. Click here for the brand I use.

Maca Root

As a caffeine-free, plant-based superfood, it's hard not to love Maca. Not only can Maca root contribute to overall well-being, but it is also believed to balance hormone levels, maintain energy, and even support a healthy libido. Click here for the brand I use.

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola rosea supports the functioning of the adrenal glands and encourages a healthy response to physical, emotional, and mental stress by supporting cortisol levels and other stress-related hormones. If used regularly, Rhodiola rosea functions to support the body's natural resistance and adaptation to stressful influences and can improve mood. Click here for the brand I use

These are items that I purchased and repurchased, mostly from Amazon, and are brands with thousands of other positive reviews.

In summary, adaptogens are Mother Nature’s antidepressants, libido enhancers and anxiety medications without an Rx. They have a centuries-long track record of use and proven effectiveness, without a lengthy list of potential side effects.

However, remember that if you are already using prescription medications, talk to your doctor BEFORE taking adaptogens or any herbal or homeopathic remedies as they may interact with your current medication regimen.

I hope you enjoy adaptogens as much as I do!
